Does the bible ever state that the earth is 6000 years old?

Moses wrote his account in Hebrew, and he wrote it from the perspective of a person standing on the surface of the earth. These two facts, combined with the knowledge that the universe existed before the beginning of the creative periods, or “days,” help to defuse much of the controversy surrounding the creation account. How so? A careful consideration of the Genesis account reveals that events starting during one “day” continued into one or more of the following days. For example, before the first creative “day” started, light from the already existing sun was somehow prevented from reaching the earth’s surface, possibly by thick clouds. (Job 38:9) During the first “day,” this barrier began to clear, allowing diffused light to penetrate the atmosphere. On the second “day,” the atmosphere evidently continued to clear, creating a space between the thick clouds above and the ocean below. On the fourth “day,” the atmosphere had gradually cleared to such an extent that the sun and the moon were made to appear “in the expanse of the heavens.” (Genesis 1:14-16) In other words, from the perspective of a person on earth, the sun and moon began to be discernible. These events happened gradually. The Genesis account also relates that as the atmosphere continued to clear, flying creatures—including insects and membrane-winged creatures—started to appear on the fifth “day.” However, the Bible indicates that during the sixth “day,” God was still in the process of “forming from the ground every wild beast of the field and every flying creature of the heavens.”—Genesis 2:19. Clearly, the Bible’s language makes room for the possibility of some major events during each “day,” or creative period, to have occurred gradually rather than instantly, perhaps some of them even lasting into the following creative “days.” The Genesis account opens with the simple, powerful statement: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) Bible scholars agree that this verse describes an action separate from the creative days recounted from verse 3 onward. The implication is profound. According to the Bible’s opening statement, the universe, including our planet Earth, was in existence for an indefinite time before the creative days began. Geologists estimate that the earth is approximately 4 billion years old, and astronomers calculate that the universe may be as much as 15 billion years old. Do these findings—or their potential future refinements—contradict Genesis 1:1? No. The Bible does not specify the actual age of “the heavens and the earth.” Science does not disprove the Biblical text. What about the length of the creative days? Were they literally 24 hours long? Some claim that because Moses—the writer of Genesis—later referred to the day that followed the six creative days as a model for the weekly Sabbath, each of the creative days must be literally 24 hours long. (Exodus 20:11) Does the wording of Genesis support this conclusion? No, it does not. The fact is that the Hebrew word translated “day” can mean various lengths of time, not just a 24-hour period. For example, when summarizing God’s creative work, Moses refers to all six creative days as one day. (Genesis 2:4) In addition, on the first creative day, “God began calling the light Day, but the darkness he called Night.” (Genesis 1:5) Here, only a portion of a 24-hour period is defined by the term “day.” Certainly, there is no basis in Scripture for arbitrarily stating that each creative day was 24 hours long. How long, then, were the creative days? The wording of Genesis chapters 1 and 2 indicates that considerable lengths of time were involved.

Answer:
Amazing what answers people can dream up isn't it? Looking into the Bible however, we can get the real answer. For instance, only the 7th day has no ending. Over 4,000 years later, Paul indicated at Hebrews 4:1-11, that God's rest day towards earth was still going on. He referred to Psalms 95:7, 8, 11 and to Genesis 2:2 and urged: “Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest.” The Thousand Year Reign of Jesus Christ, who is Scripturally identified as “Lord of the sabbath” (Mt 12:8), is evidently part of the great sabbath, God’s rest day. (Re 20:1-6) Today the end of his reign is in the future. This shows the length on that 7th day goes on for at least 7,000 years. Assuming each of the Creative Days are equal in length as are most calenders are, then all 7 would each be 7,000 years. We are not told if or how long a period existed between each day. The 7th Creative Day is known as God's Sabbath or day of rest. God does not require rest. This would mean the other definition of day of rest would apply. That of letting Earth's creation rest while going on to other projects. Whether there was addition time between those days--we have no idea. The Bible does not speak about this. The main thing we do know is the fact of the physical universe was already in existence before any Creative Days began. This would account for those stating rocks are millions of years old. Quite possibly they are as it takes several thousands of years for planet size molten plasma to cool down enough for a planet to have life on it.

Alot of american christians believe the earth to be 6000 years old. They call themselves "young earth" christians. Sarah Palin would be the most famous one i can think of. This is actually a battle between christians, even of the same faith, that has been going on for awhile now (though not really in other countries). There's also a second group of "young earth" christians who allow that the earth is just 10,000 years old. Obviously, mainstream christians disagree with both of them, but it's yet another wedge being driven between people.

The Bible states the amount of years many of the people that were mentioned in the bible lived (i.e. Genesis 5:5 "Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died") and when they had their children(i.e. Genesis 5:3 "When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness..."). So many Christians make the mathematical conclusion that the earth is around 6000 years old. This, however, is a stupid assumption.

The days of creation are 6 24-hour literal days and are presented as such in context, verbiage, definition and diction. There is no way anyone who understands Hebrew or the way ancient Hebrews wrote would find a place in Genesis for thousands or millions of extra years. The 6,000 figure is arrived at by reading the text, which indicates the ages of the various people and when their offspring were born. Other than the Holy Bible, all of recorded history has occurred in approximately the past 4300 years after the flood of Noah. Scientifically speaking, we can't know the age. There are no methods of "dating" that are accurate. All dating methods are circular reasoned with expected results always attained and unexpected results thrown out as "statistical aberration" So what does this mean? It means you can trust the word of God as recorded in the Holy Bible. Since He was the only one there to witness it, only His testimony is valid. Or, you can take the word of some scientists, who change their mind every couple of decades because they discover contrary information which requires they modify their theories. At best, they can guess and guess and guess and whichever of their "GUESSES" is the most popular with their peers, that's the one they go with. Between those two options, you would be foolish to trust man over God.

No, but according to the Readers digest bible, the ancient Jews considered one divine day to be a thousand years. So, in the first seven days, seven-thousand years passed. Also, Peter, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, said that a day to God, was a thousand years. Picture of the book I speak of http://compare.ebay.com/like/320806291740?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar With this in mind, from the time of creation, to the time of Jesus, many many thousands of years passed.

No, but someone (I think he was a philosopher) worked out that the earth must be 4400 years old according to the bible around 2000 years ago, and because he said that, christians have adopted the belief that nowadays the earth is 6000 years old.
James
I think you answered your own question, since the Bible begins a description of the "creative days" after the earth had "proved to be formless and waste." (Ge 1:2). The events that take place after the earth had already proved to be inhospitable and unsuitable for life are not to be understood as literal, 24-hours, but as a day of work, a complete time period for a specific purpose in the earth's development. So, in other words, no the Bible does not state the age of the earth.
