How does the USA school system work?

  • I know it's different for each state but can you help me understand. Here in the UK we have.... Infant school: Year 1 - Ages 5-6 Year 2 - Ages 6-7 Year 3 - Ages 7-8 Primary School: Year 4 - Ages 8-9 Year 5 - Ages 9-10 Year 6 - Ages 10-11 Secondary School (High School) Year 7 - Ages 11-12 Year 8 - Ages 12-13 Year 9 - Ages 13-14 Year 10 - Ages 14-15 Year 11 - Ages 15-16 (Year 11 is when we sit out compulsory GCSE exams in normally 11 subjects after this year we can leave school for good and find a job) Year 12 - Ages 16-17(Year 12 and 13, they are otherwise known as Sixth Form, where we sit our A level exams, these are not compulsory) Year 13 - Ages 17-18 University (normally for around 3-4 years) In each of these years we have half term holidays and full term holidays. There are four terms through each year (Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer) We start the year with the Autumn term (beginning of September) have half the term (around 5 weeks of school) then we have a week break. We go back to have the second half of the Autumn term (again around 5 weeks) then the term is over, and we're off for like 2 weeks. This happens for each term, apart from summer term. When summer term ends we have 6 weeks off. Summer term normally ends at the end of July.
