What does 'is relationship between gender and crime observable at individual or aggregate level' mean?

• This is for a criminology essay I'm doing, and I don't understand what this part of the question means. For context, the whole question is: Choose one of the following socio-demographic characteristics: age, sex, ethnicity, or socio-economic status (SES). Describe its relationship to crime, paying attention to whether that relationship is observable at the individual and/ or the aggregate-level. What are the major theoretical explanations for that relationship? To what extent are the results of prior empirical research consistent with those theoretical explanations?

  To understand a question, take each word and define it. relationship = connection gender = sex observable = can be seen and or measured individual = one person aggregate = taking all people as a whole So your question could be phrased, what is the connection between the sex of a person and crime; that you can see or measure for people separately, and for people in general? If you still don't understand. Make a question or questions of the question itself. 1. Do males or women commit more crimes? 2. Are males or females more often victims of crime? 3. When you look at STATISTICS about crime in the population, are males or females more often the victims or perpetrators of crime? (look up the words you don't understand in this) Answer. Males are more often involved in crime. (Though the incidence of female crime is growing.) Since males are more often involved on the individual level, then the statistics should show that they are more often involved in crime on an aggregate level.
