Why do I always say the wrong thing?

• Hey guys. So I'm a 17 year old, I'm pretty, smart, and a perfectionist which sucks sometimes. Anyway, well will close friends and family members I'm very comfortable. However, I'm more closed with new people which is really bad. Like with new girls I meet I feel like I'm acting fake, and then with new guys I meet I try to play hard to get I guess, and I try not to seem too approachable to them. I don't really do it on purpose though, it's just that I've been brought up with the idea in my mind that the guy always has to approach the girl first, so that's basically how I live my life right now. But lets say that me and a few guys are having a conversation, I feel like I always say the wrong thing. The weird thing is that I'm an extremely confident person, like I make speeches and presentations for thousands of people, but when it comes to simple social things, I feel self conscious and I feel like everything I say is wrong. I don't know, like the other day me and a couple of friends met a few french guys, and the french guys were all interested and talking to us when my friends were there, and then when all of my friends went to bathroom and I was the only one left, and then the guys weren't interested anymore and started talking to each other in french which I obviously didn't understand, and then in a playful way I was like : "Hey , talk in English so i can understand!" . And then they like started talking in English. But it was like awkward and they didn't seem interested in talking to me, and I feel like everything I said to them was just wrong. I don't even know anymore. Any advice?

  It is most likely because you are nervous. Next time take some very quiet slow deep breaths when you are around new people, very slowly in through your nose and then very slowly out through your mouth. It will help you relax. And plan what you will say before you say it. Think carefully before you speak.
