What's the deal with Vancouver?

Whats the best suburb to live in Vancouver?

  • I am looking to move across to Vancouver with my wife in July. We are looking to settle in Vancouver for the medium to long term. We are a young couple who love the outdoors but also enjoy the night life of what downtown has to offer. we are looking to start a family in the very near futre so would like to be in a suburb that has good schools, good parks and is reasonably priced. I will be working in Downtown. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You must know that "reasonably priced" and "Vancouver real estate" are not things people generally think of as going together. It would help to know if you mean to buy or to rent, house or apartment/condo, and also what is your idea of reasonably priced. Getting to the outdoors and finding good parks is not much of a problem in the greater Vancouver area but getting downtown nightlife nearby is going to cost you if you want to buy a place to live. Parks and outdoor activities are fairly close by in almost every neighbourhood. If you don't need to take a car to work, you might want to look at areas close to fast transit into downtown, such as the Skytrain or the West Coast Express. You can find maps of those by googling Translink, which runs transit around Vancouver.

As has been said, Vancouver real estate and "reasonably priced" generally don't go hand in hand. (Unless of course you're coming from San Francisco, Hong Kong or New York City). A recent real estate add advertised a sixty year old, two bedroom house on a small lot located in south Vancouver at $2 million. The add said it was suitable as a knock down and re-build. Having said all of that, you'd want to live fairly close to one of the three skytrain lines if you want easy access to downtown.

Unfortunately, there is no reasonably priced real estate in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland. Since you love the outdoors and will be working downtown may I recommend North Vancouver. There are tons of trails for walking, hiking, mountain biking on the "North Shore" (North & West Vancouver). Depending where you live in North Van transit to downtown can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour.

Housing in Vancouver is freakishly expensive. If you want something you can afford, you will definitely not be looking in downtown Vancouver. Try Burnaby and then commuting.

None of it is reasonably priced. Try Surrey within cycling distance of the Skytrain
