What are the most available jobs in the science field in the US?

Are there any jobs in the science field at night/graveyard shifts?

  • i have a sleeping disorder that makes me late for anything earlier than 1pm. i have found out by going to college that i really cannot handle a schedule earlier than that. i love science and would have really loved to go for molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry or natural resource conservation. but i am also trying to be realistic and i realize that most of these types of jobs are 9-5 types. i would love to work in a lab also. anybody in science fields know of the existence of night jobs? i had considered becoming a nurse also but the RN programs are so competitive that my 3.4 gpa wasn't good enough...plus as i said i'd rather work in a lab or do field research. thanks.

  • Answer:

Sure. You can be a telescope operator. If you can't get into a nursing program, I'm not sure how you think you'll earn a PhD. It's much, much more difficult.

Yes. Pursue the fields which are best matched to your abilities and interests. There are quite a few laboratory operations which operate late into the night or around-the-clock. You could certainly study nocturnal animal behavior! Independent of all this, you should actively pursue dealing with your sleeping disorder. Places like the Stanford Sleep Clinic specialize in this area. They could help figure out the cause and help you work on solutions, or tell you whether you are better off just adapting to it.

My first job after graduating was the attendant engineer for a semiconductor production line (MADT, if you care) that ran 24 hours a day. But it was a dead end job, and I transferred to a day job after a few months. So my answer is, yes, there are a few, but there is no future. You need to solve your sleeping problem. Time is relative, you just need to shift your time scale. Lots of people have sleeping problems and work 9-5 jobs. Just imagine your moved to California, so when you get up at noon, that is 9AM in CA.
