What do I need to do to teach English in Native American Schools/Reservations?
-
Hi People. Question regarding my future :) I want to teach English Language as a Foreign Language (TESOL) especially want to teach in Far East Asia, China, Japan ect. But teaching in a Native American school also really appeals to me. I am applying to do a TESOL course at University (Teach English Speaking as an Other Language). Is that enough qualification to teach English in schools (over seas - I know in order to actually teach in ENGLAND i do need a teaching degree. The course i am taking does cover actual teaching)? I searched for what jobs may be going, and i see such things as 'English Reading' ect. Right now i am doing English Language and Literature at A2 level, so i don't know if that helps. What could i do in order to teach in Native American schools? Besides chaning my University course choice - also what is the process ? I have heard you actually must go through the tribe rather than school system ? Also, I am English, in England right now, but am super alright with travel ect. hence my subject choice of career. Honestly, i like other cultures, i like meeting new people and interacting with others. English has always been a passion of mine, and i am prepared to make this goal of mine a reality. :) Many thanks to those who post a reply. Look forward to reading your posts. :)

Answer:
The requirements for teaching on reservations are the same as teaching in any state in the country. So, you would need to have to research the state requirements basically. As far as English as a second language. This is usually not required. Most Native kids are growing up speaking English. In fact, most native languages are at risk of dying out because we are speaking English as our first languages in home nowadays (unfortunately!). The only community that I know of where the kids come into school consistently speaking English as a second language (and they actually teach ESL) is Mississippi Band of Choctaw. Maybe a few SW tribes as well. But it is rather uncommon. However, just standard "English" teachers are still needed. Although, MATH and SCIENCE teachers are alway more in demand.

Native American schools on Reservation will be filled with children who already speak English, so no English as a Second Language courses would be needed. English is the first language for the majority of Native peoples.....with some also speaking their Native language, or Spanish in the US.....or French here in Canada. I would assume that any school on a Reservation would hold its teachers to the same qualifications as a teacher in a city public school.....which would mean all the appropriate schooling and certificates in that field. That is the way our Res schools here in Canada work. If you are teaching a course that is part of the provincial curriculum, you must have the appropriate certificate and training to go with it.
