-
I recently checked my loan amount on sallie mae and seen that I owe a lot of money back from student loans. Is there any grants I could apply for to help pay off some of it or all of it. Please let me know. I also reside in Indiana if there are state grants I could apply for. I have been researching online and I cant find anything.

I support the answer from thr2000_2000. If you are hoping for that, you are hoping in vain. People who owe a debt (to a university, a charge card bill, a car loan, etc.) find ways to cut their expenses and live more frugally, so they will have more disposable income to use to pay down the debt (in regular installment payments) and/or they take on an extra paying part-time job to earn money to use to pay off the debt in regular installments. A combination of reduced costs/more frugal lifestyle and a 2nd job, will be even better as means to have more money to pay off what you owe. To help you learn how to cut your expenses/live in a more frugal manner, I recommend you visit your local public library and ask a reference librarian to help you find this book: Title: IOU No More: A Quick Start Guide for Becoming Debt Free and Living Debt Free Forever Author: Sam Burton Publisher: Xulon Press, 2007 Source: WorldCat.org - a database of library holdings worldwide If the library does not hold the book for you to check out (for free with a valid public library borrower card) and read, ask how the library staff can find a copy for you at another library to borrow (InterLibrary Loan.) Read through the book and apply as many of the tips as you can. Plus, you can ask a librarian to help you find other recent books or magazine articles with tips on how to cut expenses/live a frugal lifestyle. +++++++++++ Added: The greed I see in higher education is with many for-profit/career/proprietary colleges/universities, which 1st & foremost are businesses with the goal of earning profits for their shareholders. The budgets of many government supported schools (taxpaying district community/junior colleges and state gov't funded colleges/universities have been cut significantly over many years, requiring those schools to increase the tuition/class fees they must charge students just to keep up with providing good, solid educations and facilities. That is not greed, that is the result of the terrible economy in the US that started long before 2008, when it became apparent to most people. Private/independent non-profit schools (not to be confused with the for-profit schools) have seen their endowment investments deteriorate with the major world economic meltdown. That means they cannot always offer the kind of school-funded grants/scholarships to as many students as they did previously. Source: Trends in College Pricing, 2011. No, there are no grants which directly pay back a person's student loans. YOU are responsible for that.

No, free money is only given in advance. Also, I get tired of all these people saying, "get a job, that's what we did in the old days." Yes, but in the old days, the cost of college was not so ridiculous. Imagine if the cost of other services went up as much as college education. Then, having your carpet cleaned would cost $500. And, if you complain about the price you would just hear some argument about the quality of the work, and that the money needed for pensions and such. Perhaps you would hear "The carpet cleaner can make more money in [fill in the blank], he is just sacrificing because he loves his job." There is too much greed in the school systems, that's why students are suffering. Saying, "get a job" is no different than having a burglar laughing at you as he runs off with your money.
