Is dental nursing a degree course?

How to stand out on a group interview or one to one for the nursing degree?

  • How to stand out on a group or one to one interview? I haven't applied for university yet but want to get on an adult nursing degree for next year 2013 and i am already nervous about the group interview as i am quite shy and always get put off when others are talking while im too scared to say anything wrong that might sound stupid or below what is expected... :( any ideas how to say the right thing that admission tutors would like to hear? In addition have you read any nursing books that might help for the interview? I know about the nursing journals...but what else might give a good impression e.g. extra reading that you did. I do work in a care home so i have some experience in care. I know that the nursing degree places at uni will get cut short and i desperately want to get a place for next year after i finished my access course. Id really appreciate help im dead nervous and scared i seriously want to nail it for next year and stand out from the crowd

Max has given very good info on the types of questions that might be asked and it would be a good idea to prepare some short answers for those before your interview. In a group scenario, you might be given little tasks to complete. One of the favourite types of tasks they set is ethical scenarios. in this instance, you are not expected to know all the right answers. They are just looking to see that you work well as part of a team and that you all come to a conclusion together. There are a few things that would be good to remember. - You are not expected to take control of the situation, nor are you expected to sit back and let everyone else do all the work. Speak when you have a good point to make, don't just talk for the sake of talking. - If you notice someone is struggling or isn't getting involved, try to bring them into the discussion. Ask their opinion on the problem. - Be respectful of other people's opinions, even if you don't agree. Tell them that you can see the point they're making, but perhaps your idea would be another path you could take. - if you get into a discussion about abortion/euthanasia or another controversial topic, remember that no matter what your opinion is, you must never act outside the law. I've done group interviews before and at the end they ask you how you think the discussion went. Remember this part still counts, so don't start criticizing the other applicants. Say what you think went well and mention the parts that could have been improved.

You shouldn't be nervous about this and most important you should not use this approach of "standing out". You are going to interview not for a job but for a placement at the uni to study nursing. You should first consider what are the chances for you to enter this uni based on the uni itself and not just on yourself, I mean to say where you applying? how many placements this uni offers? what's the average numbers of people applying there, which hospital this uni is linked with? Once you have selected the right uni, then, with regard to the interview you just need to be yourself... do no try to "stand out" remember this is not an interview for a celebrity tv program or something. The question you need to ask yourself first are: why do you want to become a nurse? what do you know about being a nurse? what do you think you can do well as a nurse? what do you think about somebody suffering because illness? are you patient with people? are sympathetic? can you see yourself dealing with an bed-bound ill person, caring, washing, feeding? are you a caring person? can you follow orders from senior staff? how excited are you about studying new subjects like anatomy, physiology, pathology end the rest? have you ever met any nurse who made you think "I would like to become like her/him"? ok... I stop here. What I mean to say is that if you are doing the right choice for the right reasons.... then... you just need to be yourself, be simple, be humble. Open yourself to the interviewers, make them know how important is for you to become a nurse. Make them aware of the fact you know already how hard and how important is to be a nurse and that this is what you want from your heart. Let them know that you know already there will be difficult times during your studies, but you are sure you can overcome these with the help of a pier group, your own focus and determination and the uni. If you do not know any of the above questions I would suggest you to have some work experience in a ward in some hospital. Good luck
