Transfer from community college?

Will a community college degree transfer to University?

  • So I'm trying to decide which path to take to earn my bachelor's degree and my two options are to follow a transfer plan to a specific school or to earn an associates at community college and then apply to a University/college. I'm leaning toward the latter because I would be able to complete the degree sooner than following the transfer plan, and also the transfer plans I'm looking at for the degree I'm going for are very specific and different from one another that it would be difficult to change plans if I change my mind about which college I want to attend. I'd pretty much have to start from scratch if I change my mind. So I was wondering would it be worth it to earn my associates at community college or would it only make more work for me in the long run trying to make up for transfer credits? Also would an associates from a community college be able to transfer to a school out of state?

  • Answer:

Usually associates would be able to transfer. However, this differs with each university. I live in Florida, and my university accepts people with an associates that were obtained ONLY from a Florida community college. Many other universities just require you have an associates degree, no matter what state it comes from. Contact the university you plan on attending, and ask do they accept out-of-state associates degrees or look on their website. I'm sorry I didn't see your additional details sooner. Additional details: Yes, with an associates, you make a smooth transfer into your junior year. Usually, with community college, all you're taking is courses equivalent to the ones offered at the university. That's why it's usually a smooth transfer. If a university has prerequisite courses for transfer students with AAs, usually the community college has the course available (or some sort of equivalent course). Overall, every course you would need to get the AA and satisfy any requirements to make a smooth transfer, the community college SHOULD have it and most likely they do.
