Do colleges have lower requirement for international students?

Why are some students admitted who don't meet minimum GPA requirements?

  • In the admissions criteria for certain colleges it sometimes says that you have to have a minimum GPA requirement to even be considered but I've noticed that some of these schools admit a small percent of applicants who fall below it. How do these students get in? What sets them apart?

  • Answer:

Most often, exceptional test scores. Less often, extracurricular and community activities. Even less often, mommy or daddy went there and/or made a 'contribution' to the school

Challenging classes (such as the IB diploma program) or exceptional test scores. Also, in some cases colleges want a particular student for their athletic abilities even if their academics don't quite reach their expectations. For example, Duke has an exceptional basketball team, however they have extremely high academic standards, so often times an exception is made if a particular student would make a good addition to their team.
