What do you have to do to become an Orthodontist?

What is the general course to become an orthodontist?

  • I know that you do a 4 year bachelors in science like bio or chem and a bs is better. Than you go to dental school for 4 years. Do you do 2 years of more studies to be an orthodontist or is it another 3 years? And can you please give me a description of my college GPA in order to become an orthodontist because I wish to be an orthodontist to work with kids and make them look better. I do not want to be giving injections my whole life, so I want to be an orthodontist. Money would come eventually to pay off everything but I just want a brief overview of college life and education for orthodontists. Thanks for your help

  • Answer:

It takes 2-3 years of orthodontia training. You'll need a GPA of over 3.5 to be competitive for dental school.

You'll need a minimum of a 3.5 GPA during undergrad to get into dental school. Dental school is rapidly becoming more and more competitive, so a 3.7 or better would make you actually competitive. You would then have to rank in the top 3 or 4 in your dental class (of about 60-100 other smart people) in order to get accepted into an orthodontic residency. When you first start dental school about 50% of the class wants to be an orthodontist.
