A couple of years ago I was basically scammed into signing up for a magazine subscription by Readers Direct. they made it seem like I would only be spending $49 a month for 4 subscriptions. Then I got another call from another magazine company telling me they could put me on a student discount plan. I accepted both thinking that it'll be $75 a month. Come to find out it was the same company Readers Direct in Boca Raton, FL. They sent me a letter in the mail letting me know that I had 3 days to cancel the subscriptions, when I tried calling them they never answered or the phone was busy I tried for an entire week to call them. They charged me two separate amounts of $75 per month on my credit card as well as sent me monthly bills, which last time I checked were $2600. Now I've been sent to collections and I have no idea what to do. Should I pay collections or should I find another way to get rid of this ridiculous debt?

Answer:
You should have sent a certified return receipt overnight letter after the first day of not getting your call though. That said, you've likely waited way too long to cancel this debit. The best you can do is negotiate with the collection company. Offer to settle for $x, if they accept tell them that you want a written contract signed by an officer of the company that if you send them $x that they will consider the debit paid in full and will report it so within 7-days.

The same thing happened to my sister. She contacted the Better Business Bureau. Do not pay the collections but answer their call and tell them to send you everything in writing as you are disputing the debt since you believe it was fraudulently obtained. That's what I told my sister to do and she did it and got them off of her back. You will likely have to pay something but you should not have to pay everything. And from now on, please, if someone wants to sign you up for something sight unseen, say no.

use this website. http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/reporting.php don't pay a thing you should answer their calls and simply say that you believe they are scamming you to send anything and everything in a written letter and signed with the date. take it up with other scam reports
You never responded to the bills by putting: Please cancel? You received all the magazines. You got what you were charged for. Even your card statement would show an 800 number for the company. You could have called your bank and told them you tried to cancel, and the bank would have blocked the biller. First check your credit reports. It might not on them. Annual Credit Report.com https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp All 3 reports are free once a year. No credit/debit card required. Do not pay for the score. Useless for what you need to know. Then, ask here how to deal with this.
