-
I am 18 had my licence 6 months got a budget of about 1500 for my insurance on a 1.0 corsa 3 cylinder 1998. Getting fed up of ridiculous prices that i am been quoted, because everyone is stereotyped as "boy racers", you name it i will of tried the insurance company, has anyone had any luck please let me know, i am starting to understand why there are so many uninsured drivers when they are asking for 10x the cars value they must be assuming i am going to write my car off 10 times in the year its a joke!! HELP PLEASE

Do people not realise there's a search function on this website? This exact question gets asked several times every day on here. To help you understand....the premiums are high because of the damage/expense young drivers cause to third parties, not the value of your own car. It's perfectly possible to do a million pounds worth of damage in a 1 litre Corsa.

At least Evelyn's saved my initial rant! You will NOT get insurance on a 14 year old Corsa for £1,500 unless you live in a very low risk area and are very good at shopping around, and are very lucky. Your insurance premium covers the potential damage you could cause to other people, property & vehicles: Your premium is NOT reduced because YOUR car happens to be worth £300. You can still cause £1million worth of damage with it.

Lets turn it round the other way? What can you offer the insurer to convince them that you are a safe risk worthy of a low premium? The only way you can prove that is experience, and you haven't got any to speak of. We have all had to pay those high premiums as new drivers, and it has taken years of careful driving for us to get the price down. You have got to think realistically and fairly. It simply wouldn't be fair to charge a new driver the same as an experienced driver. The value of the car isn't too relevant. If your car hits a pedestrian, it is going to do the same damage as any other car would do, and insurers don't just cover your car, they cover whatever you hit. As a new driver, there's a very high chance of you having an accident in your first year. One in four new drivers will. The premium you pay is to cover the cost of those claims. As an insurance company employee, I can tell you that it doesn't even pay for the cost of the claims. We can only make ends meet by investing that money, and other insurers have stopped insuring young drivers altogether because they are such a high risk. No insurer is going to offer a good deal when they are reluctant to take on young drivers. The average cost of young driver insurance is £4,400, so I think you are being optimistic with £1500, and I would certainly be surprised if you could get it for less than £2000. You say that you don't want to be stereotyped as a boy racer, but that is how insurance companies work. They cannot look at your past experience because you have none, so they look at the experience of other customers with a similar risk profile to yourself to try and calculate how likely you are to claim. The only way you can avoid that is to go for a policy with a smartbox. They fit a small box to your car that monitors your personal driving habits and pay your premium based on how you personally have driven.

You won't get insured for £1,500, so you can quit dreaming about that. The "ridiculous" prices you are being quoted are based on facts - young drivers are 5 times more likely to cause an accident than somebody over 30 years old - fact. Over half of the accidents caused by young drivers result in death - fact. That's why your insurance is so expensive - it's because of facts.

Drivers Training Certificate helps on insurance. Also a good credit report helps ! Age 18 and a male you are in a high risk pool, the liability rates are not cheap, couple of hundred dollars per month. Keep a clean drivers record, with no tickets or accidents or get married and the rates will come down in the future. Good Luck!

no, bozo, that isn't what they are assuming. That is the cost of the other car you will write off and the damage to the people in it. Basic maths; as you are so bad at basic English you won't understand. anyone who thinks high insurance prices are an excuse for driving uninsured should do us all a favour and drive very fast into a tree.
