Should we get a Suzuki Grand Vitara, GMC Envoy, Saturn Vue, Hyundai Santa Fe or Jeep?
-
My husband got in a car accident last week and totaled our trusty, old 2000 Saturn. It was our commuter car to and from work (I work during the day and then he takes it to go to work nights.) We have a 1-year old daughter so our Malibu is "her" car. We only have 2 weeks left on our rental and need a new car ASAP. We would like as new as possible for the lowest amount of mileage possible. I've found quite a few little cars (i.e. Nissan Versa, Chevy Aveo or Cobalt, Kia Rio or Spectra, Hyundai Elantra), but we don't want another tiny car that we couldn't really use to tote around our daughter in, especially when we have another one in a couple of years. Our rental is an SUV and we LOVE it. Ideally, that's what we'd want to get especially since it wouldn't be our commuter car so we're not all that concerned about mpg (although we still would want fairly decent). Now the challenge of which SUV to consider. We want to spend under $11k but get something as new as possible with lower miles. I have found some Suzuki Grand Vitaras ranging from 2006-2008 with miles all in the 50-60k range. I don't know much about Suzukis and barely see any on the road. My mom has the SX4 hatchback and while it's fun to drive and she loves it, the A/C has died on it TWICE already and it's a 2007. Not sure if that's a fluke or common; luckily her car was still under warranty both times but if we got a used one, it obviously wouldn't be covered. I found a 2006 GMC Envoy with 60k miles. There's also a 2007 Jeep Liberty with 59k miles and a few Patriots with around that same mileage and year.. Now, we love the 2012 Liberty we're renting but I hear their reliability is iffy so I'm not sure if buying a used one not under any warranty is a good idea? I also found a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe with 56k miles. I also found a few Saturn Vues (2006-2007) with miles ranging from 67k-70k. Any "experts"/people with experience with these vehicles would be helpful. We only have 2 1/2 more weeks on our rental and we're still waiting to hear from the insurance company about how much they're giving us for the Saturn so it's crunch time!

Answer:
GMC Envoy! Newer is not always better! A lot of "newer" cars have bad ratings and are known to have mechanical problems! But regardless of that, your premiums are going up because of that car accident!

You need to read the non-profit Consumer Reports mag on cars. For example, they find the v6 06-07 Vue unreliable in some crucial areas like drive system, suspension & brakes. And Average to Worse than average as a used car buy. Similarly, CR found that Suzuki has a Worse than average climate control system in reliablility.

I recommend the GMC Envoy. It offers a sleek exterior, roomy comfortable interior, power and performance. You may also want to check out the GM Certified Pre-Owned website (gmcertified.com) for other vehicles available in your area. All of their vehicles go through a 172-point inspection and are backed by a Bumper-to-Bumper and Powertrain Warranty. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me. I will recommend you a Suv cos personally I think that they are safety.I know that a accident is a accident but if a SUV hits a small car is not the same like u get hits on a SUV. As far as the mileage goes buying a car with a little miles doesn't mean that they going to last longer. They are plenty cars with 30.000 miles that the engine or transmission is bad. When you buy a car just have it check to make sure is in good condition. And cars old or new are like humans in a way. The way you take care of them they will last longer. If you change on time things like oil, transmission oil, sparg plugs etc you will have it fore more years than somebody that doesn't. All cars they brake down at some point and nobody and I mean it nobody can be 100 % sure that will be with no problems.Humans get sick much talk about a piece of metal. So that been said you need to buy something that will cost less to fix when that time comes. Jeep and Ford are cheaper to fix. And by the way alot of people think that having a small car saves them gas but is not true. 8 cylinders is 8 cyl. They are actually SUV with 6 cylinders. Keeping the tires inflated at the wright psi, air filter clean, sparg plugs and fuel injection clean etc can save gas to any vehicle. Good luck and I hope you'll get a great SUV for you. and your family.
