I have read many, many articles and even a few books on how to control my anger. Most of them were mediocre advice at best. But I've done it.

I read articles to better myself for me. There can be a side benefit for those around me.

The Merovingian

I assume that most of the men here are single, so if they read self-help books, it is probably on how to better themselves. Ditto for the women. Usually only religious people read books on how to be a better spouse, friend, co-worker, etc.

I'm perfect so I don't have to.

pretty much everything i read is non fiction & ive always been very interested in learning about human nature so thats most of what i read. psychology, science, gender related stuff, dating & sex. the only non fiction book i remember reading since high school was "the alchemist" which had a few maxims on life. so yes thats almost the only thing i read. but being honest i read it because 1. i have a sincere interest in it & its enjoyable & 2. for my own benefit mostly. im not on some benevolent mission of self sacrifice. i dont mean to sound like a selfish d*ck im just saying that i dont choose to read for the benefit of others.

I love to read both fiction and non. I'm trying to figure out how to word this without coming off as conceited, but I don't think it's entirely possible. If I feel a need to change an aspect of my personality, I do it for me. I don't think anything needs to be changed. I read all sorts of articles on whatever catches my interest. Some of them may have the affect of slightly altering my viewpoints. But I haven't read anything with the objective of "bettering" myself for someone else.

I used to read relationship books until I realized that: (a) they don't really help you form relationships (the advice is more geared toward saving relationships that are on life support); and, (b) most of the authors of these books were obviously worse at relationships than I was. So I started reading PUA books instead. Making myself more attractive is helping other people, I suppose.

Na, I prefer to read autobiographies of people who I consider wise (philosophers) or respectable (role models) and learn their lessons on life.

The category "men" obviously constitutes a very large group who will read a wide variety of writing, depending on their interests. Some reading will be required (rather than voluntary or self-selected) during one's education. Surveys have shown that men generally prefer non-fiction (biography, politics, history, real-life experiences) over fiction. My reading usually follows this preference.
