Why did titanic sank?
-
ok so i have some questions about the titanic... i saw the movie about 100 times and i really love it.. i know the story was made up but the thing i like about the movie is when it sank... its so sad... anyway my questions are: 1Q: why did they speed up if they said that they couldn't see a thing? 2Q: how long does it take for a ship to sink? 3Q: why did they have so many people on board but a few boats? 4Q: Didn't they have something that would help them see where they were going? 5Q: Why don't they take out titanic of the sea? some people say that its because its too hard.. and others say its because they don't want to...... 6Q: how long did it take for them to solve the mystery? i mean to find out how did it sank....when.... what time.... etc..... 7Q: did they find any bodies? under the sea? or bodies floating?

Answer:
1. The Titanic was faster than any liner of its kind previously built. The company was trying to set a record on the maiden voyage. 2. It depends on how badly it was damaged. In the case of the Titanic it was slit down the side so it sank pretty quickly. Something like 40 min. 3. The ship was considered unsinkable, so the company (White Star Line) thought lifeboats were a waste of space and weight. They eliminated some lifeboats so they could carry more people and make more money. Plus the ship 'listed' (it leaned over to one side) so half the lifeboats couldn't be launched. There are stronger safety regulations nowadays about how many lifeboats you need, and other safety measures. But even those are routinely ignored from what I hear. 4. They didn't have radar in those days. From what I've read, they had some good reason to believe there wouldn't be icebergs that far south. 5. There was a movie a few years ago called 'raise the Titanic' that showed the ship being raised and towed into new York. But the ship broke in half (the Leo DeCaprio/Kate Winslett film shows this), plus it's been lying on the bottom of the sea for 100 years, so it would just fall apart if you tried to raise it. 6. They knew what made it sink! There have been theories, though. The ship was divided into many compartments by bulkheads (walls), and the idea was that if one or two of these compartments flooded the others would be enough to keep the ship afloat. But the theory is that they made the mistake of trying to steer around the iceberg, so it scraped along the side and opened one whole side of the ship, too many compartments. If they'd just run directly into it, it would have destroyed the ship and some people might have died, but the ship wouldn't have sunk. There's also a theory that the company that built the ship skimped by using a cheaper kind of steel, which became brittle in the cold water. Whenever something like this happens there are 'conspiracy theories'. 7. Bodies don't last a long time in the ocean. They're food, after all. 8^)

1.) The Captain wanted to impress the world with the time he made crossing the ocean. 2.) Anywhere from 5 minutes to 10 hours. It depends on the size and make of the ship, as well as the actual damage that was done. 3.) The ship was considered (ignorantly) to be unsinkable. Also, there were not as many laws and Mari-time regulations back there are today. 4.) No, this ship sank in what... the 1910s? All they had was a man standing lookout, radar was not yet invented. 5.) Several reasons. It being too hard is a good start. 1000s of tons of half-rotted wreckage? That sounds not only difficult to bring up, but pointless. Remember, the shipwreck is also a grave. Would you want to be dug up? Last, there is no reason too.... we can send divers and cameras down there anytime we want to look at the wreck. 6.) There was speculation for years afterwards. You will remember that not everyone died, including many crew members. They surely would have known exactly what happened. In the 90s there was a documentary made about the sinking that got into the more technical side of the crash. You can find it on History Channel. 7.) Yes. Most are decayed and picked clean by fish. **EDIT** Ok this is in response to Allie's answer. No offense but you are misinformed about damn near everything! Stick to giving answers you know are accurate!

for god sakes, it was 100 years ago and everyone that knew anything about it is dead, move on

1 That was common practice. The belief was that you would push the Icebergs out of the way. 2 3 hours 40 minutes 3 For more deck room and they did not think the ship could sink. 4 No, just lookouts 5 Impossible task 6 Did not find it until 1985 7 After the sinking yes, most were frozen. In 1985, not they were fish food by then

the story isn't made up...the Titanic itself was a real ship that hit an iceberg, broke in two, and sunk. 1Q: probably because they didn't worry about any disasters--they considered the ship unsinkable 2Q not sure...several hours. 3Qagain, they considered the ship unsinkable, and ended up making a huge, arrogant mistake. they didn't even have a system for getting people in the life boats. everyone was scrambling around and hurting each other for a position on the rafts 4Q they have lookouts, but most of the iceberg was under water. the little bit on the surface that was visible wasn't spotted because they were practically on top of it already. my guess is that the lookouts were partying like everyone else Q5: MONEY--that's a big thing. it would be an extremely expensive thing to do Q6: no idea--they probably debriefed those who survived the experience--they took a log of who got off the boat, remember? Q7: most likely, considering how many people there were. they would want to locate as many as possible to help families get closure....and so they didn't pop back up to the surface and freak people out -.-;

my guesses (there are legit answers, these are my GUESSES) 1. I think they either figured that the speed could cause the ship to turn a shorter radius to avoid it, or possibly they thought that if they were moving fast enough, the iceburg would take more damage and the ship would breeze past it. 2. about 3 hours 3. the ship was thought to be unsinkable, so, they thought it would be unnecessary 4. It was around midnight when the boat struck the ice burg, meaning it was VERY dark, and also foggy the night the ship sank 5. respect for the dead. the ship is now considered a graveyard for all those who had died. it would be disrespectful to remove it. 6. probably within a few weeks of the ship sinking. Survivors, though few, probably told their stories, so, word spread quickly. 7. at 4am, a ship responded to the SOS of the Titanic, only an hour after the ship had completely sunk. I'm sure bodies were still floating at that point. as of today, the corpses that had sunk to the bottom are now completely gone due to scavenger fish and all that.
