Lump on horses neck?
-
Hi guys, Today after my horse was turned out, within about 2 hrs a lump developed on his neck. It's about 2 inches long, an inch wide and a cm risen. It's not rock solid, but pretty hard. It's causing him no discomfort whatsoever, he's letting me poke and prod it. He's fine in himself, no health issues. He's a 5 yr old gypsy cob, fit and healthy. I have no idea what it is! Any suggestions?

Answer:
If it is right behind the back of his jaw bone, it may be an enlarged parotid (salivary) gland. You can usually displace it and move it around some with pressure if it is the gland. If it is in this location, then I'd check the other side for a lump that may be smaller or more recessed in tissues, since typically both glands would be affected. The condition is sometimes referred to as grass glands because of the association with pasture grazing, and is a hypersensitivity reaction to something ingested while grazing out on pasture. The enlargement will typically subside within a few to several hours after the horse is brought in off of pasture. If it isn't that, then it could be a reaction to an insect bite or swelling and bleeding from a closed blunt injury. Just keep an eye on it for any changes and if it develops heat or enlarges, consult your vet for advice.

Probably an insect bite. Keep an eye on it, but it should not be a problem. Horses pick up mysterious lumps and bumps all the time and most are harmless and will go down on its own.

He could have knocked it on something or scraped it slightly and is reacting to that. It could also be a fly bite, or given the size of it, it sounds like a bit from another horse, which is the most likely answer if he is out with other. If it's only the one lump then it's probably not an allerygy. I would wait and see if it goes down by tomorrow, and if not then call your vet.

Did you turn your horse out into a toxic waste storage facility? If yes, this lump on your horse's neck could be the start of a 2nd head due to mutation. You should encourage its growth by continuing to expose your horse to toxic waste and then you can sell pictures of it to the Weekly World News.

Ive seen something similar on my horse before. The vet was luckily at the yard busy with another horse. I asked him to just take a look. He checked my horse out, said he wasnt sure but if it became worse or uncomfortable for my horse i should just give him a call. But it didnt , it just went away like 4 hours later. Just keep an eye on it incase it changes but i think he should be fine.

It might be an Alien (similar to the ones in the documentary movies made about them). It is common for horses to be victims of attacks by the Carrying Spider. I think it may be too late as if the head (the lump) is visible, it means some bones are broken, probably on his spine. RIP. IF you have insurance on it, it is covered, fortunately. You must wait until he's dead. DON'T LET THE ALIEN ESCAPE. YOU WILL CAUSE A LARGE OUTBREAK. Sorry about the news. Good luck.
