Where to buy Miles Davis Autobiography?

Im curious about Miles Davis's and Wynton Marsalis's relationshp. In his bio miles is vague Didtheygetalong?

  • In Miles Davis' autobiography "Miles" he makes a reference to Wynton as dead and a friend, which is confusing. I maybe misread but in page 387 (hes talking about Gil Evans's death and starts listing names of dead people he misses ) he says "ill miss them them, but Gil is still in my head, like Jimmy is, like Trane and Bud and Monk and Bird and Mingus and Red and Paul and Wynton, and all them other great motherfuckers, like Philly Joe, who are no longer here. All my best friends are dead" Did he mean something else? Im confused cuz Wynton is still alive, and i didnt think they go along well. Thanks

    For Miles, "Wynton" was probably pianist Wynton Kelly. He played in Miles' band, his best known work on the landmark "Kind of Blue" album. Miles knew Wynton Kelly long before Marsalis was ever born.

Miles was not fond of Wynton at all. He believed he was by far the least talented and creative member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The feeling was mutual between them though, Marsalis had gone as far as to say the last couple of albums Miles made weren't jazz at all. Miles is refering to Wynton Kelly, one of the pianists in his band.

not sure what Wynton thought, but Miles didn't care much for him creatively. Personally, he does nothing for me. Like Miles said, "same old tired BS." I also don't get any "soul" coming from him.
