Musical careers? Good music colleges in MI!?
-
Hi, I am in tenth grade, I have been playing flute since 5 grade, handbells since last year, piccolo this year, learning the violin, and hope to get piano lessons soon. I think that I would like to have a career in music, and am wondering: what careers are there in music? Also, what's a good music college in Michigan? What extra things could I do to prepare myself to get into a good music school? I am 2nd chair, beating 1 senior, and was 2 chair beating a senior and junior on separate occasions. There are no openings for drum major in marching band, but I plan on going to Solo and Ensemble. I also have a piccolo solo ( had one earlier in the year, but didn't record it). Any other things that I can do? Thank you very much!

Answer:
Generally, for undergraduate, you can choose to go in to music performance or music education. There are other majors, but these are the two you will find in any music school. Some schools you might want to look at for music: Western Michigan University Central Michigan University Michigan State University Hope College University of Michigan Ann Arbor University of Michigan Flint Now, UMFlint is much smaller than Ann Arbor, but it has (In my opinion) A nearly equally legitimate music department. Some of the best music educators I know came out of UofM Flint. The Flint campus is geared more toward education, however, while Ann Arbor is geared more towards performance. If you decide to go to UofM, I suggest checking both campuses out... Depending on your personality, you will likely find that you vastly prefer one campus over the other. As for what you can do to get in the department: Most music schools will not look at any external merits when determining whether to let you in the department, they leave all of that business to the admissions department at the college. They will only look at an audition, a theory test, and possibly an interview. I suggest finding out what the audition requirements are for the school, and be sure that you know all parts inside and out. Good luck!

The music school at the University of Michigan is one of the best in the country. For music schools, playing one instrument at an advanced level will get you much further than playing several instruments at an intermediate level.
