Why is my eye swollen?

Why is my eye swollen and red?

  • Yesterday, I noticed that the corner of my left eye was itchy and sore. I left it alone and resisted the urge to scratch it, thinking that it was a stye popping up. I thought it was a little weird that I would get a stye on the corner of my eye, but didn't think it was impossible. Yesterday evening I noticed that my left eyelid had started to swell a little and it was pink. I thought that maybe it was because I had rubbed it earlier and probably irritated it. Well, I woke up this morning and my eyelid was very, very swollen. I could still open my eye, but only halfway. I also noticed that it had turned from a light pink to a red color. I showed it to my mom and she said that it was either a stye or allergies. I honestly didn't think it was either of those - because I know what a stye looks and feels like and this definitely doesn't feel or look like that, and I've had swollen eyes from allergies and every single time it's been both eyelids and they don't get red from allergies - but I also didn't think it was very serious so I left it alone. I put a hot rag on it and the swelling went down a little bit. Well, earlier - at about eight o'clock - I got a pretty bad headache. So I laid down and read for a little bit. The headache got worse, so I just laid down and watched TV, occasionally closing my eyes to rest. I had to go pick up my boyfriend from work at eleven, so I did. When I got back, I went to the bathroom and when I washed my hands, I looked in the mirror to check out my eye. The underneath of my eye is now swollen and red, just like my eyelid. Basically, I look like someone punched me in the eye, but instead of being black, it's just swollen and red. This is really starting to worry me, so I looked up what causes eyes to swell. Apparently, there are over 70 different things it could be. This doesn't help me at all. I'm wondering if I need to take this to a doctor or not. I don't want to go to the doctor and have to pay for a visit only to find out that this will go away on its own and that I don't need medication or anything. Does anyone know what this is? If not, do you think I should go to the doctor or not? Could there be something seriously wrong with my eye? Please, please help!
