How do I get my old job to let me come back?

  • I've pretty much been laid off from my construction job since December of 2010. Reason then was it was winter, come spring I got a call but never got the message to come back. I got another call and I wanted to start back up again on a Monday-fresh week to start over and that would allow me to collect unemployment for that whole week. That would help me get by because I'd have to work 2 weeks before I got paid again at the job. Well it's been basically the run around that there isn't work. And that they hired someone else. I just heard from someone who I know that still works there that they just got a bunch of work coming up. I actually went in yesterday to plead to come back and basically the same thing. Talk to the owner. Last time I talked to him it was basically I don't know. I'm really in a tight spot now, not going to have much more to collect and nobody is calling me back where I have applied. Construction jobs just aren't as busy anymore. How can I get them to let me come back? Any suggestions on what to do? I find if they have a good amount of work coming up then why can't I come back. It was really good money so my choice to not go back when I could have last year really screwed me. I also kind of don't like the idea of applying other places since I have to use this job as a reference and I could just imagine other places calling and the secretary will play it off like I'm a great worker and then basically get me off their case if someone else hires me. I really would rather go back to a $45 an hour construction job than some cheap $8-10 an hour job working just as hard. What can I do. I'm really in a bad spot. Thinking of showing up on Friday at the end of the day and talking to the foreman. Just need to know what will help my case. So much has had to be put on hold because of not working.

    so call and ask if they can use you already - I find it hard to believe general construction pays $45/hr in this economy - very few Union jobs like electrician or steamfitter pay that and they still have 30% unemployment in big cities

Not much u can do, if they will not hire you back now except move on. You should have gone back when they offered it to you. Never turn down the job for unemployment in this economy. Of course unemployment runs out and jobs are scarce. Stop building ur hopes of getting ur old job back and put that energy into finding a new one.
