How did you get a job as a professional programmer?

What is a good Bachelor degree to get for a Job as a Game Programmer?

  • I hear Computer Science or Software Engineering is a good degree to get in to the Game Industry as a Game Programmer, Because Apparently from what I have been told, is that getting a Bachelor or a Masters degree in "Game Programming" specifically is a joke when looking for a Job as a Game Programmer, And that getting a Computer Science degree is better because at least that way you have the Knowledge to become a something else besides a Game Programmer and you have something to fall back and rely on, if you can't get into the Game Indusrty, or if you have a sudden career change. As a side question, once I finish my undergraduate studies, can I Jump right away into the Game Industry, or do I have to go to a graduate school and waste more time and money to get a Job as a Game Programmer

  • Answer:

I would highly suggest to get a comp science or software engineering degree over any gaming design degree. It WILL be harder, but you'll have more career opportunity and you will be able to get a higher salary. You may not be able to go right into your dream job right out of college. It may take several years working before you have enough experience to get hired by a major gaming company. Make sure you have part time comp sci work during school and get an internship. There are more people who want game-related job than the amount of openings, so it's hard to get your first job- you have to work your way up

The reason "Game Programming" is a joke is because there is no such thing. Programming is programming: The code used in a game can be very similar to the code you see in Microsoft Word. A Bachelors degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering will do just fine. A Masters degree can certainly help, but it doesn't guarantee you anything other than a larger student loan debt. The degree isn't as important as the education you get. There's people with a Bachelors degree that are much more knowledgable and successful than those with a Masters degree just because they worked harder and spent their free time coding rather than doing other things. That being said, if you work hard and get a Masters degree as well, then you should have some solid programming skills, just make sure you can afford it. Also, always be sure to check out the course listings at a University to see if the main classes look like they line up with your interests or career goals.
