How to transfer external data to XBOX 360 Hard Drive?

Can I transfer my xbox 360 data from one hard drive to another hard drive?

• Ok, I know you can transfer to the slim model with the data transfer cable, but what about just transfering to a new HDD external hard drive? do i need some special transfer cable that isnt made anymore? or is the modern cable compatable with either old or slim models?

  I'm not very experienced with the Xbox but I do remember after my brother got a new one last year, he used a transfer cable to exchange the data. I think his Xbox was about 3 or 4 years old, so I'm not sure if that's "unmodern" in the gaming world but I do know it worked just fine for him. He found the cable on eBay for pretty cheap and was able to transfer everything from his gamer tags to his music.
