Spanish Football: Do Barcelona need a left wingback?

  • I constantly have heard about Jordi Alba and Gareth Bale coming to Barcelona to replace Eric Abidal. Though both players are fantastic, but I just don't see Barcelona switching permanently to two wingbacks. In fact, both Alba & Bale are more of midfielders, not wingbacks, even Marcelo plays better defensively than both of them. The reason why Barcelona's defence was so better last season is that 1) Pique was much better last season & 2) most of the time they had Eric Abidal at left back, and he was on form for most of the season. Abidal pushed up when they needed him to but for the majority of the game he would sit at left back rather than left wing, giving the defence more stability. I remember Arsenal vs. Barcelona, Abidal moved to center back b/c Puyol was injured, so Maxwell played at left back but too often he pushed up and never put in any good crosses or balls. Of course, Adriano plays left wingback for Barcelona more often and he does well because his ball distribution is fantastic (crossing & passing)...but even then, Adriano is not old and Barcelona don't really need another left wingback, maybe a left back, but not a left wingback/midfielder. They can always move the aging Puyol to left back, he does well as any other center defender. And if all else fails, there's the young talent Marc Muniesa, who plays very similar to Abidal when operating left back, but the only thing Muniesa has against him is experience (though I can assure you he will get the experience if he plays more next season). I think Guardiola prefers to have two wingbacks, but I don't think it would be very thoughtful for Barcelona to snatch Jordi Alba or Gareth Bale right away, but what do you think?

  • Answer:

Gareth Bale plays as a winger for Tottenham, and hasn't played wing back in quite some time. Jordi Alba is the only real wing back, and even he has proven to be A LOT better at attacking than defending, he would be a good buy though, but would provide another Alves who's defending is even worse (hard to believe). Although at the same time he be of great use against more defensive sides and providing the width that is sometimes lacking at times at Barça, although he would definitely be used lesser than Abidal and I don't think that's what he will be wanting and this stage of his career.

here goes the story It all started about 5-6 weeks ago when Cadena Cope (Spanish radio station) reported that Real Madrid directives had asked the LFP and UEFA to conduct stronger anti-doping checks in Spain. Cope claimed that this was triggered by Real Madrid's suspicion that the Barcelona players had been doping in recent years, which would explain their "unusual" physical condition. The story goes that Florentino Perez called Rosel shortly afterwards to explain that Real Madrid had nothing to do with it, and Barcelona has begun legal action against Cadena Cope for their assertions. Whereas Barcelona directives remained quiet about Real Madrid in the beginning, Rosel has recently come out with comments hinting that Real Madrid is behind the whole story, while Laporta also spoke out today saying that Barcelona should sue Real Madrid as they were clearly behind the whole thing. The man who pisses cologne (super Pep) also alluded to Real Madrid being guilty when he said in a press conference that "Florentino Perez and Cadena Cope should get their stories straight". Last week there was also a surprise *** test by UEFA officials after a Barcelona training session in which they tested 10 players. Pique twitted afterwards something like "what a coincidence, we got *** tested by UEFA today" Obviously, this has been an incredibly sensitive topic in Spain. Recently, in Defensa Central , the newly appointed director Siro Lopez quit because after Abidal's tumor was announced, somebody posted an article in the website stating facts about the effect that anabolic steroids have on the liver. Lopez went on the popular football talk show Punto Pelota (where he is a frequent guest) to announce that he was quitting Defensa Central while in tears, and called the person who posted the article an "hijo de ***". Is there any real evidence that Barcelona players are doping? Well, some of the following may be evidence even though admittedly it is no more than circumstantial: -Pep Guardiola was already caught doping while playing in Brescia himself for using nandrolone. There was a legal dispute in which he was absolved of the charges by Brescia, but there has been a general controversy about the way he was absolved, with some anti-doping Italian officials claiming that the investigation should have continued. -Guardiola's same doctor from Brescia while he was caught doping is now working in Barcelona as one of the head doctors. -Barcelona doctors are notorious for extensively using "vitamine shakes" for the players. It has been part of the Barcelona culture for quite some time, and there are rumors that such shakes contain illegal substances that are hard to detect. -Formerly injury-prone players such as Xavi, Messi, and Iniesta rarely get injured anymore despite playing nearly 90 minutes of every single Barcelona match. Pep is known for barely rotating his squad , and the amouunt of injuries the team gets is notoriously small considering how much they play and former physical fragility of various players. -Barcelona players appear to be almost as fresh at the end of every match as they are in the beginning. It is always said that this is because how much posession they always have, but it is nevertheless suspicious that players that aren't known for being particularly that athletic manage to run as much as they do and with as much intensity in every game, especially since they barely rotate and are involved in all competitions. -Barcelona always travel the same day to every away game, which is said to be triggered to reduce the chances that there is a surprise *** test by UEFA officials. -In Spain, *** tests are done much less frequently than in other leagues. Teams always get to know in advance when they will be tested, and blood tests are rarely done. The number of players tested every season is also significantly low. -The infamous Doctor Fuentes has been heavily linked with being involved with Barcelona in the past. A few months ago there was also an allegation by a fellow prisoner (Fuentes was in prison at the time obviously) that Fuentes had confided in him that "if people actually knew the truth, the World Cup would be taken from Spain immediately" -In the last 18 months, Barcelona has "conveniently" suspended two training sessions before a UEFA *** test, one which led to a fine to the club by UEFA officials. Gareth Bale hasn't played leftback or leftwingback for over 3 years lol He switched to left winger because he was s**t at leftback Jordi Alba will join, he is from Catalonia!

Yes i believe they need this

Ami

these are all rumors , i don't see bale in Barcelona . Alba could be possible but i don't think Barcelona pay that much for him . I think now puyol plays instead of Abidal and mascherano fills for him . Te best possible Transfer for Barcelona is a centre back but again i dont have enough info about Barcelona youth and Thiago SIlva as the best option is not easy to get even for Barcelona , can they sweeten the deal (dont know ) and if what i read about Nesta going to Juventus is real then its impossible

Yes, barcelona needs a wingback, since i heard that abidal career is in jeopardy. I also heard that barcelona is after David luiz but rumors are rumors.

The whole point of a wing-back is the fact the player has less defensive duties and more offensive duties. Today the roles have overlapped a lot, fullback and wingback are no longer two distinct roles, many fullbacks play as if they were wingbacks, Maicon or Dani Alves for example, they attack a lot and have much better attacking capabilities than the role of fullback calls for.
