What does the term "Biggest Club" mean in Football?

  • For example if someone was to say that Derby County or Middlesbrough are a much bigger football team than Portsmouth FC what way do they mean this? As in terms of success or what? Please answer :)

    It's a combination of everything that we use to measure clubs, and it's completely subjective. It can be measured by fanbase, history, current success and name recognition. For example, a Derby County fan would argue that they're a bigger club than Portsmouth because they have a better history, larger fanbase and are currently higher in the league. The only thing that Portsmouth have got against Derby is probably name recognition because they were in the Premier League more recently than Portsmouth. It's completely subjective! I'm a Swansea fan and we constantly have this argument with Cardiff "Who's the biggest club in Wales." On history we're pretty level because they've won the FA Cup but we've now had two spells in the top division since they were relegated from it in 1961. We're winning the name recognition battle because we're in the Premier League. There was a poll recently that confirmed that Swansea are the best supported team in Wales, and based on current standings we're miles ahead of them. So we're the biggest club in Wales! EDIT: I think Southampton are a slightly bigger club because Portsmouth's league titles were so long ago that they can't really count. The FA Cup in 2008 (I think) makes up a lot, but Portsmouth have a smaller fan-base and have only spent a few seasons in the Premier League in recent seasons compared with Southampton's very long stint in the top flight. However Portsmouth win on name recognition because they were in the Premier League more recently than Southampton. PS The South Coast derby the other day was the best match I've seen in ages. It had everything, goals, excitement, passion and open, entertaining football. Both Portsmouth goals (especially the second) were sublime, and that Allen looks a real player in midfield. Hope you stay up even though I can't see it happening. I always thought Fratton Park was a brilliant away day! Nice old-school ground, seriously friendly fans and a really good pub across the road from the pub.

us supporters would see liverpool are bigger than everton(i'm an everton fan) because they've won more trophys and hence can attract the more talented players too come play for them...other supporters like newcastle say there 'BIG',because they have large gates compared too most others,yet they don't see there a 1 club city,so delude themselves into there size....man utd are considered big cuz of there success,but that success only occured since sky tv bought the premier league and they were in the right spot when it happened,but the've not been consistent over the life time of the club,so once they lose ferguson,there time is up..so big club arguments are pathetic,it's like me saying i've got a bigger P***s than you...it's a none argument,presented by those who can't formulate an intelligent conversation.

All depends in what context. There's finance, history, trophies won, fanbase just to name a few and of these only the third one can be truly verified so any 'result' comes down to bias and personal opinion. Feed all the "facts", as you best you can, into your computer and see what it spits out.
