Answer:
Think about that for a moment. . . I spent 3 years in Vietnam, and in fact sailed with my son in his boat to Hong Kong a few years later. He in fact spent several years there, and he (like me) is a boat nut. China is one of the poorest and crowd-est nations on the planet - believe me, those Junks being sunk for reefs and such are far from restore-able condition. In fact, most have been dangerously left afloat and lived on, well past their useful life. Photography and film, does wonders to make something old and rotten look like a collectible antique. It's not that a good Wainwright and boat builder couldn't restore it - it's just that the expense would be absolutely ridiculous. I have built boats (and restored a few) for over 40 years, and I guarantee you that building one from scratch, new, is far less laborious and time consuming than restoration. It is also far less expensive in regard to materials as well. You want to build a boat? You can build the most expensive boat on this link for about 10 cents on the dollar of the cost of restoring an old Chinese Junk. https://www.boatdesigns.com/Sailboats/departments/12/ John Now having said all that. . . The Chinese, Korean, and Philippine governments right now are very strict with who is allowed in their country. It takes explicit, official permission from their government. Travel by U.S. citizens to these countries is far from routine. It is very unlikely you would ever get permission for the purpose you have in mind. Since 2009, five U.S. citizens have been arrested for unspecified charges, and all these Governments impose heavy fines and long prison sentences with hard labor on foreigners for just looking funny or suspicious.
