How long does it take to write a screenplay?

I write well but don't have creative writing experience. Can I write a screenplay?

  • I think it'd be fun to write a screenplay, and I have a couple of ideas that I'd like to develop. I have professional writing experience, but it's been dry, academic stuff -- my creative writing skills are not too polished. What kind of training is required to get me up to speed?

  • Answer:

As a fellow writer, novelist and screenwriter, I say go for it!!! You don't really need any credentials to be able to write. Or a movie for that matter. As long as you can envision something on the big screen and you feel that you can have a loyal audience, then you will be very successful. I am part of two awesome writing communities that have helped me out tremendously because of the feedback, comments and friends that I've made. www.urbis.com Anything you can think of to write is possible here: short stories, scripts, novels, poetry, etc. I prefer this the most because of all of the options. www.zhura.com This is centered around screenwriting. I like it, but I don't particularly like the structure and the moderation of this site, but the feedback is still nice. Email me with any questions or concerns. Anytime you would like feedback, let me know!!! peace

There are several books available, on how to write a screenplay. You'll obviously need to know proper formatting and dialogue development and whatnot. Go to your local library and check out a few different books. Then download scriptwriting software (Celtx is free, and becoming one of the norms of screenwriting), and start writing. I would also recommend reading a few professional scripts, if you have not before, to make sure that you understand the format, and start to pick out things that you do or do not like. Everyone has a different writing style.

Yo can do what ever you want to, but try taking a class or getting help from a Professional. It could only come out even bette than before. Good Luck with your play! (If you do decide to write it.)

Writing a screenplay might be a different type of writing that you might be used to. I would suggest learning more about the physical concept of screenplays. For example, talk to someone who has experience with them, look into a screenplay writing course where you can share your ideas, or maybe visit a bookstore that could provide advice. good luck.

If you love creative writing and you think you have some good ideas, go right ahead! You can probably sign up for a creative writing course for screenplays at a college or night school. Good luck :)

you can try on your own. keep trying and practice.

I would start by reading a lot of screenplays, and creative writings. Try Franz Kafka.

I don't know where you would find training unless you go to college, but you could just recycle what's on television like they've been doing for about 20 years now. Then you don't have to be creative... just a good writer. :D
