What Is The Weeping Woman?

What art elements have been used in Picasso's Weeping Woman?

  • So I need to list 3 art elements on Picasso's Weeping Woman but I am not too sure, I also need to know where they have been used and the effect they have the viewer. Thank you! Picture of the Weeping Woman here: http://www.inminds.com/picasso-weeping-woman-1937.jpg

  • Answer:

    1) Texture: Rough brush strokes Adds to the general unsettling feel of the work. 2) Complimentary Color Schemes: Purple and Yellow, Blue and Orange Complimentary colors are used to "shock" the viewer, as any color matched with its compliment oppose one another on the color wheel, meaning the color contrast is greatest between them. Had Picasso used a dark monochromatic or analogous color scheme, the woman's emotion would be perceived as sad and melancholy, while the use of complimentary colors depicts panic and urgency. 3) Line: Face, hair, clothes, background; it's used throughout the entire piece. Since the lines are more angular and geometric than rounded and geometric, they were used for the same reason as the colors- to shock the viewer and draw attention to the piece. Fragmenting the woman's face in particular depicts the mental deterioration more than clearly than perhaps anything else in the work. Hope this helped!
