How to write a personal monologue?

How do you write a monologue?

  • I have decided to write a monologue for my AS level English coursework. We ar estudying " A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams, and I chose to do a creative writing coursework (because I love CW), writing a monologue for Blanche. Any tips on how to successfully write a monologue? I've never studied Theatre/ drama etc, although I find it really interesting. But I definitely need some urgent advice. It needs to be 1200- 1500 words long, with an explanation/ summarisation of why you wrote what you wrote. THANK YOU!! :) :)

  • Answer:

For her monologue, Blanche must be alone on stage. The monologue can help her to understand more clearly her situation, to express her trouble or her difficulties. So, the monologue must throw some light on the intrigue and on the character of Blanche. You have to show her being to face a delicate choice, for example, or meditating on her life, her feelings. You must then use different forms of sentences building, mixing interrogations, exclamations, sentences with verbs and others without, and also lexical terms which express feelings. Remember to use some stages direction, to show how Blanche moves herself (her gestures), or speaks (tone).
