What is the difference between social theory and sociological theory?

What's the difference between group think and social identity theory?

  • Pertaining to organizational behavior/theory

  • Answer:

Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs with some rather specific criteria. All the members of the "group" generally think alike, so when some particular topic comes up individuals censor their comments to make them match what they perceive will be the group's consensus. This keeps divergent ideas from surfacing, and creates the feeling that all agree on things when often they do not, but have remained silent. You end up with a "Bay of Pigs" or "Challenger disaster" from it. Social identity theory may include this phenomenon, but is much broader dealing with how people respond in a broader set of circumstances, and even alone, in terms of where they place themselves. It is more predictive of behaviors.
