Is it true that men can't multitask and women can't read maps?
-
Or could it be that the multitasking interferes with map reading?
-
Answer:
Yes it is. they have different rote memory systems, probably originating from the days when humans became more tribal and women would spend more time in the village with the kids and the men went off hunting. In a village there are a myriad of things to do (as well as kids etc to cope with) most of which can be done simultaneously or overlapped. When hunting the biggest survival tool is quick recognition of the environment and the ability to recall it when finding your way around.

I don't know about the men multitasking thing, because most men I know do seem to have a problem with it, but I can read a map better than my husband can. I normally do the navigation on a road trip.

I find that my wife is a far better multi tasker. I put this down to a few reasons: Practice - she's a mom and a wife and you have to be able to multi task Inherint ability - Millions of years of evolution have made women far better multi taskers (in general) than men I;m far better at "mission" type things and have been called "mission oriented) as I tend to focus better at the task at hand. Again, men in the hunter-gatherer phase of our evolution had to focus on the task....feeding the tribe and couldn't multi task. And....women have better hearing at hi pitch levels as they have to listen for crying babies that need feeding

I know I can multitask as well as read maps. My partner on the other hand reads maps well, I know he multitasks at work. But once he's home it's hard to get him to "task" at all, ha, ha.

Well no, it's not true. I mean...that is an absolute statement. Some men CAN multitask and some women CAN read maps. The part of the brain that multitasks probably does interfere with the part of the brain that reads maps....so I guess in that respect you are correct.....

that is a generality. as in 60 percent of women multitask better than men and 60 percent of men read maps better than women but i don't fit. i'm female. Reading maps is simple for me. multi-tasking is hard.
