Does New Zealand recognize DETC associate degrees?

Are foreign Social Work qualifictions (and relevant degrees) recognised in Canada/Australia/New Zealand?

  • I've a definite place at uni here in Ireland to study Arts (Humanities) as a "mature student" next Sept but I'm thinking instead of applying to do a 4 year BSW (Bachelor in Social Work) which also gives you professional Social Worker registration here in Ireland and the EU (called the "National Qualification in Social Work") How would that translate in say Canada, Australia or New Zealand - would it be recognised? Also are there opportunities for Social Workers in those countries? Are they in demand? Thanks.

  • Answer:

Hi! I'm a social worker in Ireland and I did the 4 year BSW course too! Yest the qualification does translate to other countries (in fact a lot of my friends have worked in Australia and Canada with it) you just have to make sure you get all your paperwork and registration sorted but the qualification translates anywhere. there's loads of jobs in Australia for social workers and a good few in Canada too. Obviously there's not too many vacancies in Ireland at the moment but again all of my friends are employed and I was made permanent this year so the work is certainly here too if you look for it. Enjoy it if you do it - social work is a great course and a wonderful career! best of luck whatever you do! :)
