Does anyone feel like the word pimp is misused?

  • Do you know what a pimp does in real life? He solicites women! Correct me if im wrong but a pimp is a person who solicites women to men for a fixed price. then the prostitute gives all the money to her pimp and in exchange he gives her what she needs to live and maybe a little bit of dope. does anyone else notice that the word pimp is used improperly daily. People call other people pimps when i know that person really isn't a pimp. its like its a complement. My friends at school call me a pimp because I have some women that are just friends and I say "hi" and i talk to them all the time. i know they mean it as a complement but the word is just soooooo misused it drives me nuts. I prefer the words "ladies man" over pimp. what do you think? Is there anything we can do to stop the misuse of the word PIMP?

    I agree with you whole heartedly. I have also noticed the word used in the way you describe, meaning a cool guy and ladies man,,, and I can't understand why they would use that word, and make me think that they don't respect women and just use them. That is, to me, similar to when one Black person calls another one '******', and they are okay with that with each other. to stop it? well, if we make objection it just lets them think we are not up with the latest and are not 'with it'. Some things need to be ignored, as in not reinforced. You can try saying, "Excuse me?" The next time someone says it to you. Sometimes I just pretend I don'g 'get it', and just let it go over my head. Then they stop using that with me anyway. I have found, in my experience , too,, that some people really don't understand how a male and a female can be really friends with nothing sexual going on. A lot of guys and girls think that any time a man and a woman are talking that they must be 'making time' and 'getting it on'. Well, that is their problem too. That is probably why you are so popular, and why the guys that say that are not as popular. then.. just smile I have men that are good friends, and the relationships are friendships, but a lot of people think that there has to be some sex going on. One of my friends gets upset by this, as he is younger than I am. Well, so it's good that you know how to be both romantic with a special woman, and friends with many women. Most people are very limited.. thinking only about one thing.

Yeah. Thanks to MTV bullshit, the word pimp has been so mainstreamed people don't know what they're saying anymore.

The word pimp is so 2 years ago. It's played out. Also, yes it does mean a man who collects a prostitutes money. But people use it like the word "Player". I think they don't quite know the difference.

I don't know that it's misused but I think the meaning has evolved from simply one who exploits women, etc. to more of a lifestyle - and one that people actually admire. (I don't, but many do)

Well it's mainly because of how pimps are portrayed in music videos. They're clean cut, nice dressing, expensive liquor drinking men. But in real life they're men who haven't shaved in days, bloodshot eyes, blue jeans and a white T-shirt. When people call you pimp they mean it in the way that the media portrays them, not an actual pimp.
