Planned Parenthood: “an organization that is trying to set up black genocide"?

  • Speaking on his “700 Club” program, Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson attacked Planned Parenthood as “an organization that is trying to set up black genocide,” citing a higher incidence of abortions among African-American women. Breathlessly relating an “amazing” narrative of eugenics, “unbridled sex,” and “sterilization,” Robertson extended his accusation to major charitable foundations that donate to Planned Parenthood. Said Robertson, “Planned Parenthood has gotten $100 million, $50 million each from the Ford Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation. Why do these wealthy, so-called Republican organizations pay for it? Because they were alarmed by the growth of black community and they didn’t want to have to support a bunch of indigent black babies. I mean that is the dirty little secret in there.” Planned Parenthood says they offer birth control, family planning, and gynecological care for families. What do you think?

  • Answer:

That's ridiculous. Planned Parenthood is an ally of various minority groups and especially gay groups in all communities. I tabled last summer at a gay pride festival for Planned Parenthood, and signed up for but was unable to table at an ethnic pride festival for them as well. I just read today on the Alan Guttmacher website that, unsurprisingly, four times more black women than white women have abortions in America. This has nothing to do with Planned Parenthood. It has to do with the fact that black women make up a large percentage of America's working poor and single mothers, are undereduated in their underfunded inner-city public schools, and are less likely to use birth control correctly or to be able to pay for it. This is the fault of the institutionalized racism in our system - our government and religions and culture - not of the organizations trying to help. Ugh. Religious stupidity astounds me. ___________ Oops. Black women are four times _as likely_ as white women to have an abortion: "Black women are almost four times as likely as white women to have an abortion, and Hispanic women are 2.5 times as likely." "The abortion rate among women living below the federal poverty level ($9,570 for a single woman with no children) is more than four times that of women above 300% of the poverty level." With the black and otherwise non-European face of poverty in our country, it's no wonder black women have more abortions. And "Eight percent of women having abortions have never used a method of birth control; nonuse is greatest among those who are young, poor, black, Hispanic or less educated." http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html Surprise surprise. Yeah. Some genocide conspiracy.

Wow, I'm totally blown away by that. LOL. What does he do about the fact that Catholic women have a larger percent of abortions than they "should", statistically? Does Planned Parenthood really want to eliminate Catholics? They seemed so nice when I volunteered there! It's interesting, but I always thought that pro-choice meant, well...pro-CHOICE. I mean, it's the occasional pro-lifer you hear about who wants to force poor women into sterilization, not the folks at planned parenthood. Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention, as I really had not heard anything about it. What an odd idea.

Planned Parenthood has done more good than Pat Robertson, I'll give them that. What's so bad about "planned parenthood?" Why isn't he spending more time criticizing the concept of unwanted pregnancy?

Pat Robertson is a crypto-fascist, bigoted fanatic with an anti-birth control agenda. Just thinking about him and the people who think like him makes me vomit a little bit in my mouth.

It's a sensitive subject, but Pat Robertson is hardly one who can speak with authority on it. The truth is that, at its inception, Planned Parenthood WAS heavily involved in the eugenics movement. They never performed involuntary abortions (or involuntary hysterectomies - both of which were common at the time), but some of their activists DID advocate eugenics and selective breeding. It wasn't just racist; it was also class-ist. Poor people were just as bad as blacks, who were almost as bad as the mentally retarded. I think it would be hypocritical to examine women's history without examining some of the less-than-pretty stuff. It's sort of like teaching American History without talking about the genocide of the Native Americans. Today's Planned Parenthood is an entirely different beastie. Counseling is designed to provide an informed decision, not to convince women to choose one option. To pretend that eugenics is still happening at Planned Parenthood is as dishonest as ignoring its shady history.

Ok. I read "Speaking on his “700 Club” program, Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson..." and then I stopped. *Rolls eyes*. These ego-maniacs and their handlers are constantly scanning the environment for 'material' - to justify their enormous paycheques. When they can no longer stir up shyte, the gig is up. These guys have HUGE ego's; for them, the struggle is with trying always to keep ahead of the dreaded 'Sellby Date". For them, becoming irrelevant is a fate worse than death. So the scanning continues. Year in and year out. Sometimes, errors are made - truly embarrassing errors. I'm of course referring to the allegation made by one of these tv preacher guys against a character on a (British) educational children's tv programme (aired in the USA). It was alleged that a certain purple character was corrupting American children's morals because the character (who carried a bag with 'it') was actually homosexual. This ill-considered strategy at creating controversy where there was none backfired horribly. Peals of raucous laughter echoed around the globe for months on end, and this preacher-person became the object of much deserved ridicule. It was embarrassing for everybody. It was embarrassing FOR Americans. With tails tucked neatly between their legs, the cranks and their handlers returned to the drawing board. What you see is their most recent 'offering'. Enjoy. As for me, I put these dudes and anything they have to say - on "ignore" - very many years ago.

call it what u will. look at the sad state of America. movie stars & yuppie parents have to go adapt foreign babies from asia, russia, & africa when there are thousands of abandoned black children back here in the states. what does that tell u. we suck when it comes to family values & priorities. GOOD LUCK ! X-)

Blacks only have more abortions because they have more promiscuous sex in the first place (on the average), so the racism charge is ludicrous. Pat Robertson is clearly just pissed off because of the fact that blacks have a higher rate of christianity and church attendance than whites. He wants more black children because, statistically, he would theoretically have more 'christian soldiers'. It is he who is the racist; Pat is willing to ruin many families and put more children of sleazy men into society just for the sake of the prospect of getting more followers. He is worse than Hitler.

Science

I call BS. It's probably just that they have a higher rate of sexual irresponsibility.
