What are two Millennium Development Goals that deal most directly with hunger/malnutrition?

In your opinion which of the eight Millennium Development Goals is most important to you and why?

  • The UN has only 5 years left to achieve all eight goals, but if only one was achieved fully, which one would you choose?

  • Answer:

I think eradication of extreme poverty and hunger (goal 1) should be the top priority. I believe Goal 1 is the most important because first and foremost, we can observe that population multiplies faster in poor countries while food supply is getting meager. Second, if a family’s earners have a decent job, and an income which is in excess of what they need for food and shelter, they can afford to send kids to school. Education and child health are also important goals but poverty can cause families to deprive children of these basic rights. About 5 or 6 years ago, I included the 8 Millennium Development Goals in my Economics class report. I was just wondering if the $1-a-day wage mentioned for target 1 of Goal 1 hasn't been changed through the years. If I'm not mistaken, they are 25-year goals of UN which started 1990. In my country for instance, inflation rates are increasing disproportionately with the basic wage. Decreasing those earning $1 a day by 50% until 2015 may be doable, but for me, it is not a good performance indicator for Goal 1, which is to eradicate extreme poverty by 50%.

Look, the UN will never achieve anything. It is an organization where do-nothing is their ultimate goal. Kofee Anan was the worst. Having said this, countries have to depend on themselves and become self sufficient. One more thing, according to Malthus, once the food consumption outgrows food production, then the population will start diminishing. Hunger will not be eradicated no matter what people do. The natural flow of humanity has been that to contain population, wars and natural disasters have helped control population growth. We haven't had major wars in the last 75 years and we are approching the 8 billion mark in world population. So, what the ultimate goal should be is to contain the growth of populations. Either droughts, wars or the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano will do it. Update: Ms. Understood, the way inflation is going in PI it will reach 20% in two years.
