Population increase in US by 2100?
-
I read this article of how by the year 2100, the US population will be about 571 million americans. They asked "How large do we want the US population to become? Do we want to be in a nation of 1 billion Americans? What kind of national interests are being served by large-scale immigration? How will America be better off with 571 million people? Will it help our educational system, social peace and political stability? What about crime and the quality of life? Any thoughts on what we can do?

Well, I am forced to ask, what should we do? We, as freedom loving individuals, probably wouldn't bow down to "one child only" legislations, especially with Catholics running the show. We can look at the population growth economically and say that with the increases in demand, production, research, and development, that the more population there is, the better (minus if you count in resource scarcity). Why wouldn't we want a billion, if the land would allow us that much? I do think the infrastructure, physical and social, would suffer definitely. It seems, especially now, that people aren't willing to invest much money into programs that don't give huge cash returns, such as education and welfare, so yes, that plays into the declining quality of education and life. I have to mention the crappy health care system we have here as an indicator of how we are already failing at providing adequate welfare and quality of life. However, speaking about immigration reform, as the Far East and Europe are continuing to tie closer bonds, making trade agreements and tax free zones, it is just a matter of time before we dissolve those "political boundaries" to the north and south to increase trade and make whatever products we happen to be making in the future. But I'm against it! Hah. What can we do about controlling the population growth? I'd say start with health care. If we have a means to provide free or very cheap birth control, we can keep the population down, ideally, in the cases of "unplanned" conceptions. I think most people who want kids usually have some sort of financial system going, like a career for instance. Second, I'd have to suggest changing the rule that if a person is born on US soil, then they are considered US citizens. I don't know though. Finally, I'd say stop having wars. It creates more of a burden on the US (forget the fact that we spent all this money and OPEC will get all the rights to the oil anyways), especially in health care, as there would be much less strain on health if people weren't coming back from Iraq hurt (over sixty thousand injuries, diseases, or other). http://icasualties.org/oif/ Who knows, it might just be human nature, and we would be fools to try to change it.

Over population can never amount to any good for any society, region or country. Border control has to be a number one priority for any country looking to stem over population, along with cutting back on incentives for people how have kids and can't take care of them.

If you are worried about overpopulation, then you should support current Republican policies. Destroying the environment, starving out poor people, depriving older people of pensions and retirement benefits, a constant war somewhere performing useful attrition on the young... all of this will keep the population nicely in check. Fine policies. Policies to be proud of.
