Why did the Yen strengthen in the aftermath of the tsunami despite the economy being badly hit?
-
I can't understand why. Please help. Thanks!

Answer:
It appears to be the Japanese are selling all their foreign currency and bringing the Yen home to help rebuild the Country. Lets face it if you had a relative that had had their home washed away, you would want to help. So any investments overseas would be liquidated and your money brought home as Yen. This means all the Japanese are selling assets abroad and changing the money into Yen, this increases demand and demand increases the price.
