How do I get involved with international aid work?

Can you use anthropology undergrad degree to get into aid work?

  • I am doing my BA in anthropology, however I don't think you can get into the field on an undergraduate degree. I want to do graduate work but in a field that would lead more to aid/NGO work, I am looking into development studies or politics/international relations. Are these good field to get into NGO work, I want to be out making a difference in the real world, not sitting in a classroom somewhere debating the finer points of anthro theory.

  • Answer:

Uh, over-generalize much? Why do guys always talk about useless stuff like sports? If you weren't afraid of intelligent women, you'd probably know some. But you are, so you don't.

I don't feel that that the subject of your degree matters nor does the fact that it is an undergraduate one. I have worked in and with a number of NGOs around the world and people from all walks of live with a range of degrees work in them. All that is needed is an interest and a commitment. Check out the requirements that NGOs ask for in their job announcements on their website. Problem is that many ask for experience which leads to a chicken and egg situation.
