Is anyone amazing at singing alto?

Fun question...anyone else has had similar experiences?

  • I'm joining my conservatory's chamber chorus for a performance of Debussy's 'Siren' (my sch doesn't have vocal majors) - female chorus, abt 18 of us. I'm a soprano and was initially placed in soprano 1, then because there weren't enough mezzo 2s (ie alto 2), I got shifted down since I've a bigger voice from taking lessons. Mezzo 2s are mostly made up of older women (wives of the professors and the like...we actually sounded pretty gd together). The range hovers between the A directly below middle C, and the A an octave above (concert A). I was too bored and not very comfy singing around there all the time, so when it came to higher notes, I loved them while the rest hated them. Highest note is F# (top line of stave), and I'm left solo. Then we joined sopranos for a part which starts around middle range then goes up to high A - solo again. I know I sound mean, but I'm having alot of fun with the high notes, lol. Anyone else felt this way before? ;)

  • Answer:

Yeah, I hate when that happens, because I've got quite a range, and so one of my chorus directors placed me in with the mezzos because she needed some extras. So I'm really bored in that section, and I hate singing the harmony part. I love the melody and being able to soar up to those high notes. One time my director of a play I was doing had me sing a C (above treble, which is above middle) all alone, with the rest of the company singing the c major scale. It was tough, because all the girls around me were singing G's and when I sang the C they all turned around and stared at me... lol
