How expensive are piccolos?

Does SCHILLER make good piccolos?

  • I am looking at buying a beginning piccolo and I found one around me that is made by Schiller. I have never heard of the brand so i started to do some research. I was wondering if anyone on here has any complaints or anything about the quality of these instruments. I am just looking for a beginner one and NOT TOO expensive. I have heard good things about their trumpets and euphoniums but how are the piccolos.. that i have not been able to find any information on the quality of. Thank You very Much!!

  • Answer:

If you cannot find reputable information on a flute/piccolo brand, unless their is specific information on the instrument maker and who they worked for (ex- Di Zhao), the brand is probably not going to give ou the best quality of piccolo - especially if it is a colored piccolo, surprisingly cheap, or has an odd brand name. Fluteworld, Flutespecialists, Usedflutes.com (good instruments, used, at a good deal) would be good resources. All metal piccolos have been favored for marching/pep bands due to their bright sound, however, if you are looking to play both marching and indoors I would suggest a plastic or composite piccolo. Pearl makes one for around $900, and I got my used Geminhardt 4P piccolo for only $200. Also, non-metal piccolos will be easier and gentler on the ears. You may not like it- but using hearing protection, especially if you'll be playing upper-register note, will really help you out. Don't you want to be able to enjoy music when you're 80? :-) Best wishes!

I answered your previous question, and you gave me the BA, mainly to reject the expert info I gave you - but I am stubborn enough to try again. These are trash - a no-brand factory that will slap any name you want on them. Go on www.fluteworld.com and find a decent all-plastic piccolo there. You said you were taking piccolo lessons - so what are you playing on NOW - the school's piece of all-metal crap? Yes - you will need hearing protection. Or lose hearing in your right ear - your choice. You will not notice this happening, until it is too late to revers it. Be stubborn - and deaf. Hope you find something good - and I wonder why your piccolo teacher ( are they a professional multi-degreed and certified teacher??) is not giving you this advice - you had to ask HERE???? Added - Oops - my apologies - I confused you with another student with a very similar question. Good luck in your picc shopping.

FAIR

I am a beginner piccolo player as well and I am currently using a 'Yamaha' piccolo, and I think it's a really good brand. I have never heard of 'Schiller' before, but I would go with either a 'Genienhardt' or a 'Yamaha' because they are familiar piccolo brands and they get good reviews. I don't know if you have a music store called 'Music Showcase' but they have really good renting prices and such where you only have to pay $20.00 a month, which is cheap compared to the other store prices. Good luck! I absolutely love marching with piccolo :)
