Good colleges for BFA Musical Theater??

  • I want it to major and have BFA in msuical theater...not Acting with a concentration in Musical theater cause that is just dumb. What colleges offer this program and are really good at it? they dont have to be well known but I just want have a hove a great experience where i will learn more than the proforming arts high school i attend right now.

  • Answer:

Well there are a few different theories about this whole "studying theatre in college" thing. 1: A liberal arts degree with a major in theatre studies gives you the broadest understanding of "the world." Giving you the most tools you will need to be an actor/actress--because you're only as good as your life experience has allowed you to be. 2: Actors who are classically trained {post-stanislavsky} are {depending on the school} based in realism/naturalism. So it may benefit you most to get a basis in Shakespeare/Chekhov/Shaw while honing your vocal skills so your actor training will subconciously bleed into your vocal performance. Instead of the other way around {being the soulless and empty eyed, but perfectly sung, performances that are plaguing broadway and london these days} 3: {warning, personal opinion} all of the great Broadway "stars" are actors first, then singers. 4: Stay away from 2 year programs such as AMDA--they will leave you broke and stupid 5: Schools worth checking out- Northwestern, Loyola University Chicago, Case Western, the Universities of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan, NYU, and Illinois Wesleyan. Don't even bother with Yale or Harvard until Grad school...their undergraduate programs are highly overrated...i.e. they receive little to no funding compared to their grad schools so don't waste your time there. 6: Try to pick a school where the professors all work professionally. 75% of the business is networking, and you could be the best actor in the world but if you're stuck at some 5th tier university in the middle of nowhere--noone will ever know it. 7: When it all boils down to it once you graduate its not whether your degree says "BA" "BFA" or "MFA" its how dedicated, persistant, and passionate you are about your art. Where there's a will, there's a way.

The Savannah College of Art and Design has a good BFA in Performing Arts and you can take a minor in music performance and dance. Not to mention you can join performance ensemble (scholarships and you need to audition) and participate in the musicals (In the years I've been there they've done West Side Story, A Chorus Line, and Guys and Dolls.). There are also voice lessons with Robin Elkins, though I don't know if she's going to be there next year.
