I CAN NOT Dance! Would I be Judged If I Went to Dance Classes?

  • I'm 15 years old girl planning to start taking Hip Hop and Contemporary/Lyrical dance classes. Q. I CAN NOT dance at all! I'm quite really fit but I have zero flexibility or coordination. I'm wondering it'd be 'funny' and LOL if some chick who can't even do a leg split came to a dance studio. I'm taking "Beginner" classes and willing to practise my butt off. But still, I can't shake off the feeling that I'm going to be judged on how much I suck and coming to a nifty dance studio as somenone who knows 0% on dance and don't have ANY skills. Is this true? Any advice/answer pls?

Haha, you sound like me. I take dance classes and I'm around your age and I just started like a month ago. Seriously, I am unbelievably horrible and have no coordination, but the more classes you take the better you get. I would just try it. Granted, other people will be better than you, but just don't compare yourself to others, because it will honestly just get you all down on yourself. Just go there, work hard, and prepare to learn. Evderyone has to start from somewhere. :) Good luck!

Don't worry about what everyone else thinks. Just remember that you're taking dance class to learn how to dance and also remember that everyone has to start somewhere.

No one ever gets anywhere if they worry too much about what others think. Everyone has to start as a beginner at one point or another. I took dance for 18+ years and there are those who have only taken dance for one or two years and they could easily whoop me. Remember, two or so years of learning in your adolescence is more important that ten years of a childhood.

You are 15--everything is so completely magnified and OMG off the scale intense. Just go with it. Yeah, you'll be a dweeb for a while (I"m 49 answering this, so stop giggling at "dweeb"). But the mistakes and awkwardness are temporary. If you work at it and work through the mistakes you'll get good at dance. Doing splits--work at it, work on your stretches and strength exercises with a good coach or teacher and you'll get there.

Just go and try. A good teacher can work wonders.
