How can I improve my range and tone quality?

Tone quality on high notes in flute?

  • I'm trying to find a video or some sort of guide for helping me play high notes with a good tone. My low and mid range notes have good tone but anything past High E and I begin to lose my tone drastically. Is there something that I'm missing? My flute teacher have an amazing tone in the high register but I am not able to get that good of a tone. Yes long tones help I know, but are there other things that I am missing? if you can find a guide anywhere that will help alot. Thank you

  • Answer:

The support from your diaphragm, which is CRUCIAL for a good tone production! Please consult a flute teacher for more guidance, it is the only way to avoid bad habits!

The higher the note, the louder it sound. One of the main things I do on high notes is play softer. It will balance out. But also keep your air stream steady so it doesn't go flat.

When playing higher notes, you should do vibrato, so the fading pitch isnt as noticeable. With tone quality, it has much to do with the way you are sitting, the amount of air you are using, and the space in which the air is being pushed through. try using different positions with your mouth, and sitting while practicing. part of the problem may also have to due with an air leak somewhere on your horn. have your instructor take a look at it. another contributing factor could be that you are somewhat new to the instrument, so you would be nearly as good sounding as your instructor who has probably been playing for well over a decade.
