What would be a good way to get into Julliard?

How do I or can I get into Julliard?

  • I am 15 year old viola player who is imterested in making a career of what I love to do, which is playing music in an orchestra as a viola player. I dont know what the qualifications or requirements for getting into Julliard are. I have played the viola for 5 years now and have loved every single year of it. During all of my middle school years I was first chair. When I went to high school I was not first chair right away they gave a seat and had no organized way of telling who was 1st or 2nd chair so I was most likely last. I transfered schools in 10th grade to a school which had some sort of ranking system. I "challenged their first chair for his spot and won. All I want to know is what I need to get in, what I have to do and some tips on what I should do. Thank you our all your help it is very much appreciated.

First step is to learn how to spell Juilliard.

Being the best in your school is not nearly enough. Being the best in your state would mean that you had a better chance, but you'd still have to beat out a lot of other violists who were the best in their states. The competition is quite stiff. Check their website for their admission requirements.

i think you should contact them about their requirements.

College Information Do not limit yourself to 1 school. There are many great schools with outstanding music departments. Check with every school that you would consider. They all have contact information on their web sites. Ask for entrance requirements. Ask about classes and degrees offered. Ask if auditions are required. Ask about scholarships and their requirements.

I can't exactly answer this - because I'm still wondering the same thing about me and my violin. But, recently, I contacted Juilliard on email and was explained this: "Acceptance to Juilliard is based on live auditions at which the faculty evaluates each student's artistry, potential, and technique. The Admissions Office does not have an arrangement with the faculty to evaluate potential students other than during the designated audition period. An audition is granted after the student has submitted an application to the school. Many departments require a CD recording of the required repertoire, which the faculty evaluates before inviting selected students to the live auditions in New York. The entire application process is outlined on our Web site: www.juilliard.edu." Based on what I understand, if you work really, really hard, it's still possible. Hope this helped, Lexa
