Good and easy way to learn how to play electric guitar by yourself?
-
I have plenty of free time so I'd like to use some of it doing something productive. I have an electric guitar I bought a years ago. It's nothing special of course but I barely even touched it because I don't know how to play it. If I learn how to play well I will buy a better one. But right now this one is fine since I know nothing about guitars. What's a good way and easy way to learn how to play by yourself? I heard some people have learned how to play well by reading tabs. Any tips and advice?

Answer:
You're better off getting lessons from a professional guitar teacher and using all of your free time to practice. This is the best of both worlds; your teacher will set you on the path to success and you will go down that path rapidly. When you teach yourself your teacher doesn't know how to play the guitar. Good luck to you.

alot of people i see here post things such as ''i taught myself piano its easy'' let me say any instrument is easy, but to properly play it & understand what the heck your doing (this helps your creative process when writing your own stuff) is another different matter. i could be taught to recite out 10 basic piano tunes, but give me the likes of Mozarts music & ask me to use certain techniques that are heard on piano. i would fail (as would all the people claiming ''its easy'') the problem with teaching yourself guitar (or any instrument) is that alot of people give up they get frustrated. (supposedly 90% of self taught musicians quit) also alot of people can ''play'' guitar, ie bang out a few songs & intros eg starirway to heaven. guitarists are a dime a dozen, everybody plays guitar (heck i play guitar) however a decent guitarist is hard to find this is where you can benifit from lessons. Lessons are definitely a great idea, a teacher can show you techniques & correct you. i still get corrected over things i do at my lessons. alot of the internet resources aren't that great, again it is alot of amateurs with bad technique or looking to make a quick buck. every music autobiography i have read (& i read quite a fair bit of them) the guitarist/any instrument, has gotten lessons at some point. there are a rare few virtuoso (ie talented) people who didn't get lessons but even at that they start practicing with other people who have got lessons & learn off them. As somebody said those ''guitar for dummies'' are great, however that is as a side tool to reference to. not to just teach yourself, at a glance you learn the basics but when you study those books they can get quite complicated & a teacher can clear any questions you have. a teacher also encourages you to practice & gives you set goals. PS try not to ask people to give you the chords to a song, its better if you can work them out yourself it creates an ear for certain notes. however make sure what you are playing is correct. PSP: as for what i have read in many music autobiographies (its all i read) 9/10 of the guitarists got lessons at some point for a while (even Cobain although he lied about it)

yea man just start laying tabs if you dont know how to read them this is a basic thing the e a d g b e written verticall is the strings e is the fattest string then a then d then g and so on the tab is read from left to right and the numers written are the frett which you need to hit think of it like a graph line up the number with the string and then play that then the next one along do the same until you play the whole song if all the numbers are in one vertical line then this is a chord and you must hold down every number on the right strings good luck

Take it one step at a time. You're not gonna shred overnight. Learn how to interpret music in as many ways as you can. By ear, tablature, sheet music, chord sheets... It's good to know all of that, in order to be a well rounded musician. The last three each have their strong points, depending on what you want to play, and playing by ear helps you determine if you're reading (or if it's written) right. It takes time, effort, patience, and lots of practice. Practice, practice, practice. You don't have to go nuts and play for 8 hours a day (hey, it works for some people), but the key thing is to practice often, and practice new things whenever the last thing you learned becomes second nature.

Like the guy above me said, take baby steps. Guitar can take a little while to learn... some people prefer lessons, but I taught myself how to play. I just listened to a wide variety of songs, looked up tabs for them, stuff like that, and I slowly progressed into more difficult things. After a year or so of doing this I was set for a band or project. But you're a different individual, so it may take more time, it may take less time. I picked up a few books along the way just for some tips and tricks, and I turned to fellow guitarists a couple of times, but it was mainly a self journey. And at the end of all of this, you'll feel extremely accomplished. Hope I helped, and good luck! P.S. I've written about 50-60 songs in my entire guitarist career, especially in the past 2-3 years where I've been taking guitar extremely serious. Just don't give up man, it takes time and patience, but it all pays off in the end.
