How can I improve stage presence?

  • I play guitar in a band and i'm wondering what I can do and what the rest of the band can do to improve our stage presence.

    I've got plenty of stage experience under my belt. Remember to always dress for the occasion. I mean really put some consideration into your duds, check out other bands' fashions and have some courage to try new things out fashion-wise. Don't ever keep your back to the crowd. Look like you're into your craft, don't start mindwandering and worrying about your laundry onstage (Brian Eno style!). Pull off new effects and choke those sounds out of your guitar as if your ghostbusting the spooks out of the machine. Freak out during the parts you want people to move to. Watch Nirvana's "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" and pull a Cobain once in a while. He had flair. And don't be pretentious (playing your axe with your teeth, spinning drumsticks, etc.)

Make sure that you have a very distinctive personality/mannerisms. Take the ones you have and exaggerate them, make them noticeable from the stage. And always be doing something, try not to fade into the background.

You gotta loosen up and move around. People respond to action on stage. Spectacle may have been the lowest form of entertainment back in Ancient Greece, but it is paramount now. Watch some dvds of bands like Rammstein, Primus, The Who, Rage against the Machine or any band that has an awesome stage show. You'd be surprised how many notes you can miss when you are rocking out on stage. Most people at concerts aren't musicians and don't know whether or not you just botched your Gmaj7add9 or your whole tone scale... they could care less. But if you look bored or boring then they'll grow tired of you no matter how much your music rocks.
