What does it take to become a global artist?

What are the first steps I can take to become a "freak folk" artist a la Animal Collective?

• I'm an aspiring artist. I have a real knack for writing lyrics and have done so for a lot of my friends' bands. My musical background is decent enough that I can read most sheet music. I've played saxophone, acoustic guitar and a little bit of piano. What sorts of equipment do I need to buy in order to follow in the footsteps of somebody like Avey Tare or Panda Bear? What do I need to learn? I love this music and for some reason - this is odd, I know - I feel as though I can produce something just as special. Thanks for your consideration!

  I've seen Kimya Dawson doing the same, thanks. I will now check yours. Yeah, the animal dressing thing was a little creepy at first, i don't know why. But somehow I now get it and I am starting to love this music. I now know It has nothing to do with children and also the choirs that are really fast with a lot of people on them and the cursing, it just takes me to another world and gives me the shivers and love it. Definitely not aimed at children as this music is very sophisticated, even though it might be a little deceiving.
