What Is Dexterity?

What are some things is can do to practice building dexterity in my fingers for piano?

  • specifically, i really need it for my left hand (as im right handed, and already have a decent amount of dexterity for my right). i know i can just practice some bass cleft scales (are bass cleft scales any different than treble?). but i mean when im not by a piano/keyboard, what are some things i can do to help build the dexterity?

  • Answer:

Most music stores carry a variety of hand exercise gizmos you can check out. They're usually in the guitar department, since people have the most trouble holding down those individual little strings; but those toys should work for any instrument. You can also squeeze an ordinary stress ball. Or, here's a thought: If you sit at a computer for a good deal of time, devote a portion of it to typing and/or using the mouse with your left hand only.

are you taking lessons? dexterity (assuming you mean by speed and precision....) is gained by practice. Just find a song you like and practice practice practice! :D after playing for a while you'll get far better at matching timing and othering things into the mix. :P sorry about this being a dumb answer.... if you have any questions message me. =]

Ask your TEACHER about ETUDES. This is the way that all the best pianists have learned for centuries - or are you not *into* lessons? If so, you are doomed to be slow an sloppy forever - or you could go opne the phone book.
