Who does this comedy stand up?

Why Do You Go To A Stand Up Comedy Show? What Do You Want To Get Out Of It?

I am studying the effect of comedy on society and wondering what is the role of stand up comedians today? Are they just meant to be entertainers? Social commentators? Controversial and edgy? So for those of you who enjoy stand up comedy, I ask you: What do you want out of a stand up comedy show?
Answer:

Something to make me laugh (sorry for being obvious) but mainly something new. Social commentary is OK but is generally quite similar never mind who is doing it and I can often get the same kinds of jokes from my friends because it's something many people can do. Although (I am ashamed to admit) I do get a large amount of my new from comedy it is mostly radio rather than stand up. Controversial and edgy can work and sometimes I find it very funny but often it just declines into being offensive and stupid. I like general observational comedy but my favorite is when it leads on to something surreal, (it is more likely to be something new that way not just complaining about chavs etc) and it's nice to know it's not just you who thinks strange things sometimes.
